In today’s robust marketplace, it can be challenging to find and hire honest professionals you can trust, build a sustainable working relationship with, rehire, and refer.  Whether is it a daycare, accountant, or contractor, we must exercise biblical discernment and godly wisdom as the bible cautions.

Before I accepted the calling to follow Jesus Christ, I was involved in a very dirty industry with multiple snakes at every corner.  As a realtor, I was dealing with corrupt mortgage brokers, bankers, and salespeople.  In order to survive in the industry, I had to become dishonest just like everyone else.  This was before I had a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, so I was tempted daily to live a life of sin because of my career.  I always knew something was wrong, and I woke one day and left it forever, leaving all profits and people behind.  Shortly after, I accepted the salvation Jesus Christ offered me, and today I am pleased to say that after repenting and getting saved, I am living a life that is centered around Him in an industry of His prompting for me.

In short, a Christian business is that light on top of the mountain that offers truth and hope to the community.  They treat their employees as partners while praying for them regularly. Perhaps they offer personal prayer time at the office.  Their bylaws should contain elements of their faith. Surely they espouses biblical values in all of their dealings publicly with others.  Specific values to look for when hiring a Christian company are honesty, integrity, and excellence.

Honesty means always fighting for the truth in every circumstance.  It is said that the truth will set you free, but it will offend you first.  The bible also says to speak the truth in love.  This means that we should always correct our neighbor when they are in error, by adding a grain of love to it (Ephesians 4:15).

Integrity for a company means doing the right thing no matter the cost.  This also means not being concerned with the popular opinion of the world system.  A Christian business should be more concerned with the Word of God than the news, social media, and even profits.  The bible makes it clear in several places to put God’s obedience first, and then everything else follows through His grace and our obedience (Matthew 6:33).

Excellence has many forms, but one strong component can be described as being willing to improve yourself by being a good listener for your employees, partners, and vendors.  When you accept Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior, He puts a hunger and thirst for righteousness in your heart.  This should be the fragrance that is spread out to others as one conducts their affairs.  A Christian business should always be humble to receive feedback from the community, customers, and even the government.  Excellence according to the bible means doing what Jesus would do in every circumstance.  Since this is impossible to accomplish in human terms due to our flesh, we need to crucify our flesh every day and allow His spirit to work through us through intentional surrender (Galatians 5:16).

  1. I am a Christian, but I have to ask. How do you screen these companies? The devil hides in churches and places like this. I have had very bad luck using a couple businesses from the Christian yellow pages, but would love for something to exist where they’re very screened. How would you do that?
